Write Circle with Nikita Singh: Press Release

The Write Circle of February 22nd, 2017 hosted Nikita Singh, best-selling author of romance novels. Held at ITC Rajputana, the session was moderated by Aakriti Periwal.

Being one of the country’s leading writers, and one so young, curiosity about the secret behind Nikita’s large body of work is only natural. On being questioned, Nikita elaborated her writing process – she has written most of her novels in two weeks! Contrary to writers who take years to finish one work, Nikita prefers to write in one go, and does not stop until she’s done. Prior to the actual writing, she spends months planning character outlines so she has the details down to pat for when she starts.

Aakriti commented on what sets Nikita’s work apart from the rest of India’s romance novelist – her strong female characters. Nikita admitted that this is the most important part of writing for her, but it comes naturally as she has been surrounded by strong women all her life and drew from their strength. She emphasised that women are not as gullible as romance fiction has traditionally portrayed them, showing us why young, realistic voices like hers is the need of the hour for Indian literature.

Apart from this, Nikita also spoke about how her life in multiple towns and cities across India, especially her move to the USA has helped her be susceptible to new ideas. Another influence was her time spent as an editor in the publishing industry, as in her own words, “I was an editor before I became a writer.”

Nikita went on to speak about the various ways in which romantic relationships in books often create stereotypes about women. She also touched on the subject of strong female friendships – a relationship that is often ignored in favour of romantic relationships between the male and female leads.

The event was held on February 22, 2017 at ITC Rajputana, Jaipur at 6:00 pm.
